Obama administration pulls references to Islam from terror training materials, official says

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole confirmed on Wednesday that the Obama administration was pulling back all training materials used for the law enforcement and national security communities, in order to eliminate all references to Islam that some Muslim groups have claimed are offensive.

“I recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security,” Cole told a panel at the George Washington University law school.

The move comes after complaints from advocacy organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and others identified as Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the 2004 Holy Land Foundation terror fundraising trial.

In a Wednesday Los Angeles Times op-ed, Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) president Salam al-Marayati threatened the FBI with a total cutoff of cooperation between American Muslims and law enforcement if the agency failed to revise its law enforcement training materials.

Maintaining the training materials in their current state “will undermine the relationship between law enforcement and the Muslim American community,” al-Marayati wrote.

Multiple online sources detail MPAC’s close alignment with CAIR.

In his op-ed, Al-Marayati demanded that the Justice Department and the FBI “issue a clear and unequivocal apology to the Muslim American community” and “establish a thorough and transparent vetting process in selecting its trainers and materials.”

Specifically, al-Marayati called for a new “interagency task force” to review the training materials — a task force including representatives of the Islamist organizations the FBI is tasked with monitoring.

Some believe the Obama administration’s Justice Department will go even further.

“The Attorney General has announced what sounds like reprogramming if they find people who have actually received training” that Islamist groups find objectionable, Center for Security Policy president Frank Gaffney told The Daily Caller. Gaffney is co-author of a report, published by the Center, titled “Sharia: The Threat to America.”

Dwight C. Holton, the U.S. Attorney in Oregon said he had spoken with Holder directly about the issue of the terror training materials. Holton is the federal prosecutor who announced the arrest of so-called “Christmas tree bomber” Mohamed Osman Mohamud in 2010. That announcement made no mention of Mohamud’s Muslim faith.

“I want to be perfectly clear about this: training materials that portray Islam as a religion of violence or with a tendency towards violence are wrong, they are offensive, and they are contrary to everything that this president, this attorney general and Department of Justice stands for,” Holton said Wednesday. “They will not be tolerated.”

Such training materials “pose a significant threat to national security, because they play into the false narrative propagated by terrorists that the United States is at war with Islam,” he added.

In a Sept. 12 letter to White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan in September, Democratic Senate Homeland Security committee chair Joe Lieberman and ranking Republican member Susan Collins called for “meaningful standards” to govern counterterrorism training materials.

“Proper training about violent Islamist extremism is absolutely essential for our law enforcement personnel in order to empower them to identify and understand this grave threat, and then protect the American people from it,” the senators wrote. “Part of this training must be an understanding of the clear and profound difference between Islamist extremism, which is a totalitarian political ideology that is at war with us, and Islam, which is a religion practiced by more than a billion people around the world, including millions of law-abiding and loyal Americans.”

FBI analyst William Gawthrup is one of several experts on Islam whose training materials arouse the ire of the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated groups. At the beginning of a videotaped presentation showing one of his training modules, Gawthrup makes exactly the same distinction demanded by Sen. Lieberman. The video was published online in June.

“Understand that what we are going to be doing is looking at Islam as an ideology, not as a religion,” Gawthrup says in the video.

“What’s the difference? Religion is man’s relationship to his deity. In the United States, we protect it under the first amendment. We’re going to set it aside. We are not going to discuss religion. We are going to discuss Islam as an ideology — man’s relationship to other men.”

“We’re going to be discussing that component of Islam that is nonreligious,” Gawthrup adds. “That component comprises about 83 percent of the ideology. Islam is only about 17 percent religious. The other 83 percent discusses the relationship [of Muslims] with the non-Islamic world.”

Now the Obama administration is establishing an advisory panel to vet terror-training materials for law enforcement and the intelligence community “that is comprised of people from the same organizations that are cited as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation terror fund-raising trial,” according to Gaffney.

Reviewing these decisions at a forum about Sharia on Thursday, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew C. McCarthy said the effort to include such groups as reviewers of training materials would have a “paralyzing” effect on law enforcement.

“What you’re doing is empowering the worst elements of the American Islamic community, which are the leadership elements linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, and you’re selling out the rank and file of American Muslims,” McCarthy said.

Catholic school hosts terror-tied group
Staff says didn’t know CAIR under probe, parents outraged

Parents of a Catholic high school in Ohio are outraged that the principal has invited a terror-tied Islamist group to an “interfaith” event at the school to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

The “Interfaith Iftar” dinner, to be held Aug. 26 with the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Franciscans Network, will be hosted by Mother of Mercy Catholic High School in Cincinnati.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, has proven ties to terrorists and has been blackballed from outreach by the FBI.

Fight back against CAIR’s attack on First Amendment by making a contribution to WND’s “Legal Defense Fund.” Donations of $25 or more entitle you to free copy of “Muslim Mafia” – the book so devastating to CAIR the group is trying to ban it.

Asked about it, the school says it was unaware of any such controversies surrounding the group. Nor did it know that the IRS recently revoked the nonprofit status of CAIR’s national office for failing to disclose its foreign funding sources. Or that the Justice Department named the group an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-financing trial in U.S. history.

“Wow,” said the school secretary, “I didn’t know that.”

She referred questions to the principal, who did not return phone calls.

Washington-based CAIR remains under active investigation by a federal grand jury for allegedly providing material support to Hamas, a federally designated terrorist group responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Israelis and Americans.

The FBI, as a result, has cut off outreach to CAIR and all 30 of its branches in the U.S. – including its Cincinnati chapter.

The Iftar is a fast-breaking meal after sundown during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

“Mercy is honored to have been asked to participate and has offered to host the event in Mercy’s cafeteria,” said principal Diane Laake onthe school’s website.

She said Muslim and Catholic youths will deliver presentations about the meaning of fasting in both religious traditions.

“They are all about being PC,” complained a Catholic member of the local parish who wished to remain anonymous.

Laake described such events as “vital bridge builders for our students and Mercy families to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity.”

“Part of our mission as Catholic schools is to prepare our young women to live as compassionate, respectful and enlightened global citizens,” she added. “How better to accomplish this than by sharing a meal together as Jesus often did?”

In addition, each year Mother of Mercy seniors in the Comparative Religion class visit and tour the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati in West Chester.

The administration’s background knowledge about CAIR consists of what CAIR has told it: “CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.”

But CAIR has documented ties to terrorists, recently exposed in the bestselling”Muslim Brotherhood: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiring to Islamize America.”

Earlier this year, the IRS revoked CAIR’s nonprofit status for failing to file three consecutive years of tax records as required by law. The IRS responded to requests for an audit of the group by Senate and House Republicans citing the blockbuster findings revealed in “Muslim Mafia.”

The Justice Department says CAIR is a terrorist front group for Hamas and its parent, the radical Muslim Brotherhood, according to court records in the Holy Land Foundation trial, which ended in convictions on all 108 counts of felony charges against the Hamas front group and its leaders.

“CAIR has been identified by the government at trial as a participant in an ongoing and ultimately unlawful conspiracy to support a designated terrorist organization – a conspiracy from which CAIR never withdrew,” said assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Jacks, who recently won an award from Attorney General Eric Holder for convicting the Holy Land terrorists.

“From its founding by Muslim Brotherhood leaders, CAIR conspired with other affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood to support terrorists,” wrote assistant US attorney Gordon Kromberg in a separate 2007 court filing.

CAIR in 2007 was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation’s criminal scheme to funnel millions of dollars to Hamas suicide bombers and their families, prompting the FBI to cut off all outreach to the group.

“We do not have a relationship with CAIR. There are individuals in CAIR with whom we had issues with and continue to have issues with,” FBI Director Robert Mueller testified earlier this year before Congress, specifically citing “concerns with regard to the national leadership.”

His assistant Richard Powers earlier identified these individuals as “executives” currently working inside CAIR’s national office in Washington, and the “issues” as the “connection” between the executives and the Hamas terrorist group. Powers confirmed the group and its leaders remain under FBI scrutiny.

“Until we can resolve whether there continues to be a connection between CAIR or its executives and Hamas, the FBI does not view CAIR as an appropriate liaison partner,” advised Powers in a 2009 letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee. “The FBI has suspended all formal outreach activities with CAIR.”

A federal grand jury in Washington is actively investigating CAIR and its ties to Hamas, which is a federally designated terrorist group that has murdered countless Israelis and at least 17 Americans, while injuring more than 100 U.S. citizens.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The CAIR legal attack on WND’s author is far from over. WND needs your help in supporting the defense of “Muslim Mafia” co-author P. David Gaubatz, as well as his investigator son Chris, against CAIR’s lawsuit. The book’s revelations have led to formal congressional demands for three different federal investigations of CAIR. In the meantime, however, someone has to defend these two courageous investigators who have, at great personal risk, revealed so much about this dangerous group. Although WND has procured the best First Amendment attorneys in the country for their defense, we can’t do it without your help. Pleasedonate to WND’s Legal Defense Fundnow.

Getting closer: A look at how Radical Islamist enclaves in the US have been allowed to get out of hand

June 9, 2011 in Cair, FBI, Islamic, Muslims, Radical Islam, Terrorism

Recently a spate of activities connected mainly to the Minneapolis area have underlined the continuing threat from radical Islamists here in the US. This week, it got even closer to home – so to speak. In Mogadishu,Somalia  a suicide bomber who killed two African Union soldiers may be an American citizen.

“We’re aware of the bomb that went off in Somalia and we have folks over there and are working with people over there to try to identify the bomber or bombers,” said Steve Warfield, a spokesman for the FBI regional office in Minneapolis told CNN. “We don’t know if there’s any (tie) to Minnesota, and we won’t know the answer to that until we have official confirmation of who that bomber is.”

Unfortunately for the politically correct spokesman,  al-Shabaab, a Somali militant group allied with al Qaeda, posted a statement on its website identifying the suicide bomber responsible for Monday’s bombing as Abdullahi Ahmed, a Somali-American from Minneapolis. As usual, and so there would be no doubt, Al-Shabaab also posted a statement and a 20-minute audio clip from the man it identified as the suicide bomber, who spoke in English during part of the recording.

Quoted from CNN

“I have been a member of al-Shabaab for two years. I am from Minnesota, USA,” Abdullahi Ahmed is quoted as saying in the statement. “I am so happy to turn my body into shrapnel for the infidels.”

Omar Jamal, the first secretary to the Somali Mission to the United Nations, said the man speaking on the audio recording brought back a “vivid memory” of his former acquaintance, Abdullahi Ahmed.

“This guy was a young guy, he was a taxi driver in Minneapolis … I met him a couple of times, and we debated about the current Somali situation and Jihadist philosophy,” said Jamal, a Minneapolis resident and advocate for the city’s Somali community.

“He was really very fundamental, to the point where he believed I was brainwashed by the U.S. government. So he was very clear in what he believed,” he said.

In 2008, a sizable group of young Somali-American men left Minneapolis — home to the nation’s largest Somali population — and were feared recruited by al-Shabaab. Several were reported killed, according to Minneapolis community leaders.

The family of one, Jamal Bana, 20, told CNN in 2009 that they learned of his death via the Internet. Another one, Shirwa Ahmed, 27, blew himself up and killed 29 others in the fall of 2008 in what was believed to be the first suicide bombing carried out by a naturalized U.S. citizen. The incident raised red flags throughout the U.S. intelligence community.

Several of the young men are now facing federal terrorism charges because of their alleged involvement with al-Shabaab. The alleged offenses include providing financial support to those who traveled to Somalia to fight for al-Shabaab, attending terrorist training camps operated by the group and fighting on behalf of it, federal prosecutors said in a release.

The U.S. State Department has said al-Shabaab is believed to have ties to al Qaeda.

Al-Shabaab has been waging a war against Somalia’s government in an effort to implement a stricter form of Islamic law, or sharia law. Somalia has not had a stable government since 1991, and fighting between the rebels and government troops has added to the impoverished East African nation’s humanitarian crisis.

Al-Shabaab is one of almost 50 groups that have been designated by the State Department as foreign terrorist organizations.

End quote.

But let’s not worry only about Minneapolis, because as long ago as April 9th 2004, one Randall Royer an officer of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) pled guilty to a two-count charging him with aiding and abetting the use and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. Much more important was the aiding and abetting of terrorists from here getting into a training camp in Pakistan operated by Lashkar-e-Taibe where they received training in the use of rocket-propelled grenades. Randall is where he belongs: behind bars. But how many others are out there “aiding and abetting” Islamic Radicals and how long will it be before we have to fear Suicide Bombings on our soil?
