Las Vegas police: Man faces terrorism count after fire at power facility

By Katie Ann McCarver

A man accused of breaking into a power facility and setting a vehicle on fire next to a transformer has been arrested on a terrorism count, according to Metro Police.

Mohammed Mesmarian, 34, was located by counter terrorism detectives and taken into custody Thursday in Boulder City, police said.

Mesmarian is accused of breaking into the Mega Solar Array facility on U.S. 93 at about 11:35 a.m. Wednesday and causing damage by setting a vehicle on fire, police said.

The facility is owned and operated by Invenergy and AEP Renewables, according to the Invenergy website.

On-site personnel at the facility immediately notified authorities and shut down the plant’s operations as a precaution, in accordance with industry-standard safety protocols, said a spokesperson for Invenergy, a global developer and operator of sustainable energy solutions.

The facility provides energy to 13 properties on the Las Vegas Strip, all belonging to MGM Resorts.
